National Day of Prayer

As some of you may or may not know, since 1952 Congress set forth a National Day of Prayer, asking all Americans "to turn to God in prayer and meditation at churches, in groups, and as individuals". This day unites Americans in a common goal, prayer and petition before the Lord Almighty. Recently, there has been a lot to pray about, so I believe the observance of this day is as important as ever.

This observance has come under a lot of scrutiny over the years. Most recently the Freedom from Religion Foundation (FFRF) sued a number of officials, including President Bush, saying the observance "allows the government to have unrestrained authority to demean members of any religious group without legal consequence. The federal government could declare the 'National Day of Anti-Semitism' or even declare Christianity the official religion of the United States, but no one would have standing to sue because no one would have to 'pass by' those declarations." In 2009, the Obama Administration asked the U.S. District Court to dismiss the case, because FFRF had no legal standing to sue and that the tradition of the National Day of Prayer even preceded the signing of the bill in 1952 by Harry S. Truman. FFRF then proceeded to add President Obama and Press Secretary Gibbs to their law suit.

On April 15, 2010, U.S. District Judge Barbara Crabb ruled the statute for a National Day of Prayer was unconstitutional stating "prayer is so personal and can have such a powerful effect on a community that the government may not use its authority to try to influence an individual's decision whether and when to pray". An appeal to this ruling was filed by the U.S. Department of Justice on April 22, 2010.

Brothers and Sisters, this day must be observed by every American who sees a need for revival in our great country! We need Christian leaders at the local, state, and federal level to start standing up for what they believe in, and put bi-partisan politics to bed. This isn't about Republican and Democrat, conservative or liberal. This is about the state of our country and the souls of the people in it!

This year's National Day of Prayer is Thursday May 6th. What I am recommending is getting the class together at some point during that day to lift our hearts and prayers to the Lord in a group observance. I know this day is a weekday, and a lot of people are busy, so we need to pick a time that works for everyone. I would suggest some time in the evening we all meet at the Sunday School house, and we spend some time in prayer and worship. I will bring this up in Sunday School this week to see what you all think.

It is time to make prayer a priority in a very lost nation! This begins with a spark, which will become a raging fire with constant tending and vigilance! Let us be "Joyful in Hope, patient in affliction, and faithful in prayer". - Romans 12:12

A Call to Witness

For those of you that attended Willowbrook this weekend, a challenge was issue by our Pastor. We were asked to invite our unchurched friends to church this weekend to celebrate Easter. It has been presented to us that more people go to church on Easter than any other Christian holiday (I'll have to check the sources on that one...). So, if you know anyone who might need a refresher course in Christianity or there's a person you've been asking the Holy Spirit to inspire and make "ripe for harvest" (John 4:35), this might be a good time to do it.

In that same light, I invite you to listen to Pastor Lon Solomon's most recent sermon. A little background about Lon, he is the Pastor at McLean Bible Church in Washington, DC. Lon grew up Jewish and has since become one of the leaders in the Jews for Jesus movement. He has recently been working his way through a series called People Jesus Met. It's a pretty interesting study about the people Jesus interacted with in the New Testament during his 3.5 year ministry. I encourage you to listen the his most recent installment about the Samaritan Woman at the Well (John 4:1-42). Go to McLean Bible Church's Sermon Page and select Part 34 of this series. In his sermon he outlines how to witness to people just like Jesus did. This message really spoke to me, and I hope it speaks to you as well.

Have a blessed week, and we will see you on Sunday.

The Staff in Your Hand - A Devotional

Moses answered, "What if they do not believe me or listen to me and say, 'The LORD did not appear to you'?" Then the LORD said to him, "What is that in your hand?" "A staff," he replied. (Exodus 4:1-2)

Devotional
Sometimes we agonize in prayer over a particular situation and we ask God to give us wisdom as to what to do. We may wonder what is taking him so long to answer. Our problem may be that we are looking for the answer to come our way when the answer is already at hand. For Moses, the answer was actually in his hand. Moses had the answer he was asking God for, but he had to first learn that he could use his staff in a new way. God may be speaking to you about a new path, or, he may be prompting you to do the ordinary in a more extraordinary way. Stop and think about the abilities, possessions, relationships or experiences that you already use. As you spend time in prayer, ask God to show you how you can reorganize those into new patterns to pursue the new paths or ways he has in mind for you.

Welcome, Caden Horton!

It's late, so you probably will not get this until Thursday, but baby Caden arrived tonight (Wednesday) at 10 pm!! He weighes 7 pounds, 6 ounces. Mom and baby are doing great. Emily was still in the labor and delivery room when I talked with her, so she did not know her room number on the Mother/Baby floor yet. She is at Huntsville Hospital. She and Jamey welcome any visitors and you can start coming by Thursday afternoon. If I find out a room number tomorrow, I will email it out. If not, you can just go the Mother/Baby floor and ask for her room number. I believe that is the 5th floor. I should know after delivering two babies there myself, but I can't remember if that is correct!! Let us all praise God for a healthy baby and new addition to the Horton family! God is so Good!!! :)

The Drake-Hamilton Open

For this month's social event, we've planned a night of bowling at Plamor Lanes in Huntsville (see link on the sidebar for directions) on March 20 at 6 PM. I spoke with the manager there and she was able to get a pretty good deal. The cost will be $10 per person, which includes 2 games and shoes. I estimated 40 people (if we have more, that's cool), which will get us 8 lanes. I read a review online that said Plamor is "smoke free" since 2008, so we won't have to worry about that. Also, they have standard bowling fair (pizza, nachos, soda, etc.) if you want to grab a bite, too.

So bring your family and some friends, and we'll have a great time of fellowship and bowling.

Like a dear...

Devotional

As the deer pants for the streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God? (Psalm 42:1-2)

Whether in the best of times or in the worst of times, God calls us to pray, as he said, "Pray at all times (see Eph 6:18)". However, in real life we find ourselves praying more fervently, more specifically, in the worst of times. In Psalm 42, we can see that it was during this kind of worst time that David found himself seeking God for the troubles of the present. Have you ever wondered why a deer pants for water? The deer pants because it has been running from danger. Fears and worries, temptations and trials, these are often dangers that keep us on the run. So, run towards God. Stop all activity. Talk with him and read his Word. Prayer is simply talking with God and sharing all of your worries, concerns, and joys with Him. Drink in all you can of his faithfulness, his love, and goodness, his promise of sovereignty over every detail of your life. Be refreshed in his presence.

Follow You

Recently, I came across a song by Leeland featuring Brandon Heath. If you don't know anything about these artists, I suggest checking out their websites.

The song is titled Follow You and has some lyrics that challenge us all. I really felt like this song was speaking to me, and I think it might appeal to some others as well. The lyrics are below...

You live among the least of these
The weary and the weak
And it would be a tragedy
For me to turn away

All my needs You have supplied
When I was dead You gave me life
So how could I not give it away so freely?
And I´ll...

Follow You into the homes of the broken
Follow You into the world
Meet the needs for the poor and the needy God
Follow You into the world

Use my hands use my feet
To make Your kingdom come
To the corners of the earth
Until Your work is done

Faith without works is dead
On the cross Your blood was shed
So how could we not give it away so freely?

Follow You into the homes of the broken
Follow You into the world ooooh
Meet the needs for the poor and the needy God
Follow You into the world yeaah
(repeat)

And I give all myself, I give all myself
I give all myself to YOU
(repeat)
Yeaaaaah

Follow You into the homes of the broken
Follow You into the world (Follow YOU)
Meet the needs for the poor and the needy God
Follow You into the world

Follow You into the homes of the broken
Follow You into the world
Meet the needs for the poor and the needy God
